Java remains a core enterprise language in the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey. Plenty of candidates list Spring and Java on the resume; fewer show how they keep services correct under concurrency. Themes from r/ExperiencedDevs and r/java mid level threads favor production judgment over JVM trivia.
These five questions surface concurrency experience, collection choices, remote debugging, consistency boundaries, and tradeoffs, not wait notify quizzes.
1. “Describe a race condition or thread pool issue you handled. How did ExecutorService (or similar) factor in?”
Strong candidates name the symptom, the shared state, and the fix (locks, immutability, or queueing). Weak answers recite thread theory with no incident.
2. “Pick a collection (or concurrent collection) for a concurrent use case you built. Why that one?”
You want fit for access pattern: map vs list, ConcurrentHashMap vs synchronized wrappers. Weak answers default to ArrayList for everything.
3. “How do you debug a production issue you cannot reproduce locally?”
Listen for logs, metrics, request IDs, heap or thread dumps, and safe rollback. Strong candidates describe a real case. Weak answers only say “add more logs” with no process.
4. “Walk through a transaction or consistency boundary in a service you built.”
Framework light is fine; Spring is ok as an example. Good answers cover what commits together, retries, and failure modes. Weak answers only name @Transactional.
5. “Describe a feature you shipped in Java. What tradeoffs did you accept?”
You learn prioritization. Strong candidates weigh latency, complexity, and operability. Weak answers list frameworks without decisions.
Turn answers into comparable evidence
Log one concurrency incident, one collection rationale, one hard to reproduce debug, and one shipped tradeoff per finalist.
One scorecard for every finalist
Use the same five questions for each candidate for this opening. Consistent questions support consistent evaluation, which aligns with EEOC guidance for employers to apply the same standards to applicants for the same position (EEOC).
