Junior Java roles get noisy fast. Tutorials, boot camps, and classroom grades all look similar on paper.
The five skills below separate someone who can join a real codebase from someone who only knows keywords.
1. Solid object-oriented thinking (not just syntax)
They can explain classes, interfaces, and when to favor composition over inheritance. They are comfortable with collections, exceptions, and basic generics without treating Object as a magic escape hatch.
2. A working build path on day one
They have shipped at least one non-trivial project with Maven or Gradle. They can add a dependency, run tests from the command line, and read a failed build log without spiraling.
3. Tests they actually run
Look for JUnit (or similar) plus a habit of running tests locally. Juniors do not need fancy architecture yet. They need proof they trust automation more than “it works on my machine.”
4. Debugging competence
They can read a stack trace, set a breakpoint, and form a hypothesis. If their only move is print-line guessing, your senior engineers will carry them through every ticket.
5. SQL and data realism
Most Java jobs touch a database. Basic SQL, understanding of joins and transactions, and honesty about ORM limits matter more than memorizing Hibernate trivia.
